US President Joe Biden defended his decision not to impose sanctions on Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in connection with the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, on which the US administration recently published a report.
Biden pointed out, in an interview broadcast by the US network “ABC” on Wednesday, that acting against a figure in the Saudi royal family would be an unprecedented diplomatic act for Washington.
A US intelligence report, released on February 26, indicated that the Saudi crown prince had given his approval to the Saudi intelligence security team that killed Khashoggi.
“We held everyone in that organization responsible, but not the crown prince, because we never knew, when we had an alliance with a country, that we went to the head of state and punished that person and ostracized him,” Biden said. at the interview.
The United States often singles out Saudi Arabia as a strategic partner, given its oil production, its position vis-à-vis Iran, and its cooperation in the war on terror.
The United States announced the imposition of multiple visa restrictions, including sanctions, on the Saudi team that participated in the murder and dismemberment of Khashoggi inside the country’s consulate in Istanbul.
Biden had criticized Saudi Arabia during his election campaign, saying he wanted to turn the kingdom into a “pariah” because of its violations, including assassination.
Human rights groups and press organizations denounced the decision not to impose sanctions on the Saudi crown prince, saying the matter indicates that the emir and other authoritarian leaders will escape punishment in the future.
Biden said he agreed to release the intelligence report on Khashoggi’s assassination and said he had “made it clear” to the King of Saudi Arabia, Salman bin Abdulaziz, that “things would change” regarding the Saudi deal.
