The president-elect of the United States, Joe Biden, described the violent group that swept through Congress as “national terrorists.”
US President-elect Joe Biden described the violent group that swept through Congress as “domestic terrorists” and blamed outgoing President Donald Trump for the violence.
During remarks in Wilmington, Delaware, on Thursday, Biden said that the hundreds of Trump supporters who stormed the Capitol should not be described as “protesters.”
Instead, he said they were a “gang riot: local insurgents and terrorists.”
He added that what happened on Capitol Hill “represents, in my opinion, one of the darkest days” in American history.
Biden also said Trump was guilty of “trying to use the crowd to silence the nearly 160 million Americans” who voted in the November election.
Biden added that Trump “made clear his contempt for our democracy and our constitution” and unleashed a “general attack” on the nation’s democratic institutions, which ultimately led to violence on Wednesday.
The events of Wednesday night left 4 dead and several injured. Police said the total number of detainees last night in connection with the riots was 68.
