The speaker of the Lebanese parliament, Nabih Berri, said today (Wednesday) that the new Lebanese government “can see the light in four or five days if the positive atmosphere continues.”
Berri’s office quoted him as saying in a statement that “the next government may see the light in four or five days if the positive atmosphere remains as it is now.”
Saad Hariri was appointed prime minister for the fourth time last week, following political disputes over the formation of a new government that will have to address the country’s insoluble financial crisis.
Hariri promised to form a government of specialists to carry out the reforms contained in a French initiative aimed at opening the door to foreign aid. The political disagreements that characterized the last term, during which Hariri held office, paralyzed for weeks an agreement to form a new government.
Hariri faces great challenges in obtaining approval for ministerial formation due to the sectarian quota system in Lebanon. The government must solve a list of problems, including a banking crisis and a currency devaluation.
