Fighting escalated in the Nagorno Karabakh region between the Armenian and Azeri armies, with reciprocal attacks to control the cities of Fuzuli, Gabriel and Tatar. While there were several deaths and injuries on both sides, the two sides exchanged accusations of violating international law and attacking civilian targets.
Dozens of people have been killed and hundreds injured since clashes broke out between Azerbaijani and Armenian forces on Sunday, in the worst clashes in the region since the 1990s.
For his part, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan accused Turkey of providing military support to Azerbaijan.
Pashinyan confirmed the presence of Turkish military officers in Azerbaijan to lead ongoing military operations in the Nagorno Karabakh region.
He called on the international community to condemn what he described as the aggression by Turkey and Azerbaijan, indicating that this threatens the existence of the Armenian people, according to him.
On the other hand, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev denied the participation of Turkish “F-16” fighters in the battles in the Nagorno Karabakh region, and denied the presence of Syrian fighters in the region.
The President of Azerbaijan said that Turkey is not a party to the conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia, and that Turkish support for Azerbaijan is limited to moral support only.
On the other hand, Aliyev rejected any possibility of holding talks with Armenia about the region, calling the Armenian demands unacceptable.
aRetiring is the solution
In a related context, Turkey’s Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said: “The only solution to the problem of the Nagorno Karabakh region between Azerbaijan and Armenia is the withdrawal of Armenia from the Azerbaijani lands it occupied.”
Ihsanoglu added, during his visit to the Azerbaijani embassy in Ankara, that the decisions of the United Nations, the European Council and the European Organization for Security and Cooperation on the integrity of Azerbaijani soil are clear, and if Armenia does not withdraw , the problem will not be solved.
In turn, Russia called on all its partners, especially Turkey, to do everything possible to persuade the warring parties in Nagorno Karabakh to cease fire and return to a peaceful settlement through political and diplomatic means.
The Russian presidency said in a statement, “Moscow is in constant contact with Ankara, Yerevan and Baku on various levels regarding developments in the situation in Nagorno Karabakh.”
He added that Russia’s position, which he described as balanced, in the face of the conflict in the disputed region, allows it to play a mediating role in resolving the dispute.
In its statement, the Kremlin said that any statement about providing military support to one of the parties to the conflict in Nagorno Karabakh adds fuel to the fire and that Moscow strongly rejects it, according to the statement.
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo urged Armenia and Azerbaijan to cease hostilities.
He said during a visit to Crete: “I and (Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias) discussed the conflict in Nagorno Karabakh. The two sides need to stop the violence and work with the countries that co-chair the Minsk Group and come back. to substantive negotiations as soon as possible. “
An emergency session
Along with these events, the UN Security Council will hold, on Tuesday, at the request of European countries, an emergency closed meeting to discuss the events in Nagorno-Karabakh.
The sources said the meeting will take place around 9 pm GMT, at the request of Belgium, following an initiative from Germany and France.
Since Sunday, Estonia, a non-permanent member of the Security Council, has insisted that the council should meet to discuss the situation in the region. According to the same diplomatic sources, Great Britain joined the European request.
According to diplomats, the Security Council can issue a statement at the end of the meeting, and in case this is not possible, since the statements of the Council are not issued except by consensus, the European member states of the Council can issue a statement that represents them alone.
