Fakhri Zadeh was 59 years old at the time of his murder. He was the leading Iranian scientist in nuclear, defense and missile research, and a professor of nuclear physics at the Imam Hussein University of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, east of Tehran. He was also deputy of the Iranian Defense Minister Amir Hatami, and head of the Organization of the Ministry of Research and Innovation, according to statements by the minister himself.
