The President of the Republic, Michel Aoun, asked “to address the issue of people who leave Lebanese lands by sea illegally, from two security and humanitarian angles,” underlining “the need to address the social reasons that lead these people to leave Lebanon by illegal means, which expose them to painful incidents “The sea caused family misfortunes in which several victims of different ages died.” Aoun also asked “to combat the networks that regulate this type of transport through the sea in contravention of the law, and take appropriate measures to do so. “

Aoun’s words came during his presidency of a security meeting attended by the Acting Prime Minister, Hassan Diab, the two ministers, Zeina Aker and Mohamed Fahmy, as well as the army commander, General Joseph Aoun, and leaders of the security services. The meeting was devoted to discussing “incidents of illegal transport of people by boat from the Lebanese coast to Cyprus, after these accidents increased and victims of all ages occurred.” The meeting was informed about the reports available to the military and security agencies and the means to control these violations. During the meeting, Diab called on the competent security services to “expedite the taking of measures aimed at coordinating the security services in order to put an end to the illegal movement of people across the sea.”

Meeting decisions
After the meeting, it was decided to assign the General Directorate of Public Security to communicate with the Cypriot authorities to establish the necessary procedures for the recovery of migrants and to intensify the intelligence and investigation work to discover networks that work for the smuggling of people. It was also decided to intensify maritime patrols within available capacities and coordinate with the leadership of “UNIFIL” to detect and monitor vessels and establish a framework for cooperation in this regard, with the army command assigned to “establish a special center for search and rescue in cooperation with the relevant ministries, especially the Ministry of Public Works and Transport. ” Also among the decisions is “Communication from the media, municipalities and local authorities on the dangers of illegal immigration.”

The reality of prisons
On the other hand, at the meeting prison conditions were discussed, especially after the appearance of cases of the Corona epidemic in several of them, so it was agreed to hold a meeting to discuss the issue of prison overcrowding and the spread of Corona among several prisoners, knowing that “the concerned leaders confirmed that the situation in the prisons is under control and health and emergency treatment are carried out in accordance with current regulations.”
