The Azerbaijani Defense Ministry announced the destruction of the S-300 missile system of the Armenian Air Force on the front line in the Karabakh region.
The ministry’s press service said: “Yesterday, during the fighting in the Shushakind region, in the Khojavend region (the contact line in Karabakh), the enemy’s S-300 anti-aircraft missile system was deactivated.
Earlier, the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry stated that the Armenian S-300 systems protecting Yerevan’s airspace were withdrawn from combat service and sent to Karabakh.
Violent clashes broke out in Karabakh between the Armenian army and local forces, on the one hand, and the Azerbaijani army, on the other, amid mutual accusations of provoking a new round of clashes.
The Karabakh region was separated from Azerbaijan, which was part of it in the Soviet era, due to an armed conflict, and declared its independence in 1991.
However, no country in the world has recognized the region, including Armenia, despite its close ties to the region, which Armenians consider part of their historic lands.
Azerbaijan insists on the return of Karabakh and the return of hundreds of thousands of displaced Azeris to their areas there, and the conflict continues despite regional and international mediation efforts.
