With cautious optimism, the educational family made up of the Ministry of Education, representatives of educational institutions, teachers and parents left the meeting of the government palace yesterday, where the interim prime minister, Hassan Diab, promised to reserve the “AstraZeneca” vaccine for 34 thousand teachers in the ranks of official certificates, in public and private schools as a First stage, with the modification of the arrangement of the education sector in the national vaccination plan from the third stage to the second stage, provided that the Minister of Education Tariq Al-Majzoub submits a letter to the Crown Committee.

Health Minister Hamad Hassan will present these suggestions, attached to Minister Majzoub’s letter, at the Corona committee meeting next Monday to build on the requirements, especially since Lebanon is scheduled to receive early in the next week a shipment from “AstraZeneca” containing 90 thousand vaccines.

Although it is expected to launch a platform for teachers to register their names, linked to the main platform of the Ministry of Health, the sources of the meeting clarify that “the safe return to blended education (face-to-face and online), which is planned for the day 22 of this month for official certification classes does not depend only on the vaccine, which may not confer adequate immunity. During this short period, it is mainly a matter of implementing the health protocol in terms of respect for social distancing, bus transportation conditions, adherence to masks, and ventilation of the place. There was also a promise from the Ministry of Health to ensure PCR and RAPID TEST tests.

Attendees heard positive words from the Prime Minister’s Health Affairs Advisor, Petra Khoury, about previous experience in coeducation, especially attending classes, and that the situation inside schools was acceptable compared to outside, and that the opening of schools had become a necessity. Some of the attendees did not hide the suspicion about the vaccine itself and the talk about a boycott by some countries, which may lead to the reluctance of some teachers to take it, so it was reassuring that the subject is under study and monitoring and presented to the scientific committee, and there are studies that confirm its effectiveness.

On the other hand, the educational family discussed with the Prime Minister the financial and technical aspects related to distance education and Internet security. In the first topic, Diab explained the exact financial situation of the state, and it seemed that there was an exclusion for the possibility of providing some support, for the bill to ensure 500 billion pounds for the education sector, of which 350 thousand millions for private. schools and their families and students, and 150 billion for public schools and their families and students. The same applies to the one million pound student support project, which was previously agreed in the presence of the prime minister, several ministers and the governor of the Banque du Liban, and then bypassed.

Regarding the issue of the provision of free internet for distance education, Communications Minister Talal Hawat, who participated in the meeting between the ministry and the Ogero Authority, said that the matter was not easy to investigate because it was very expensive, so the ministry’s contribution was limited to some limited contributions.
