The US Air Force said artificial intelligence was able to replace the copilot during a test flight of the U-2 Dragon Lady reconnaissance aircraft at high altitudes.
The US Air Force added, in its statement, that artificial intelligence was used for the first time in this role, aboard a US military aircraft.
The statement described this trip as a “milestone” and “a great leap in the field of national defense in the digital age.” He said the trip took place last Tuesday.
“On December 15, the United States Air Force used artificial intelligence for the first time as a member of the flight crew on a military aircraft,” the statement added.
The statement noted that the artificial intelligence algorithm known as ARTUµ was developed by a group of scientists from the United States Army.
The statement indicated that “the artificial intelligence system has been trained to perform certain tasks during the flight that could have been performed by the co-pilot.”
During the test flight, ARTUµ was “responsible for the use of detection equipment and the tactical navigation system”.
The statement said that the aircraft “carried out a reconnaissance mission during a simulated missile attack” and that the algorithm’s mission was to discover enemy bombers.
