The Catholicos All-Armenian, Kariken II, called on Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan to resign from his post in light of the crisis in the country, according to the church’s headquarters media office.

A letter issued by Kariken II said: “In times of crisis, we address the Prime Minister, Nikol Pashinyan, with a parental call to make the decision to resign from office, in order to avoid riots, possible clashes and tragic turns.”
Earlier, Aram I, the Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia (who cares for the children of the Armenian Orthodox Church outside of Armenia) sent a similar message to the head of the Armenian government.
The Armenian opposition launched a broad protest campaign in Yerevan, with the expiration of a period previously granted to Pashinyan to resign from his post, amid the acute crisis in the country following the signing of its prime minister, on November 10, together with the Russian presidents, Vladimir Putin, and the Azeri, Ilham Aliyev, a statement. The opposition viewed Pashinyan’s move as a “surrender” to Armenia after 44 days of military clashes between Armenian and Azerbaijani forces in the region. The opposition also holds Pashinyan responsible for the country’s economic and social problems.
In the context of the current political crisis, the head of state, Armen Sarkissian, called for the formation of a government of national consensus that would manage the country’s affairs until early parliamentary elections.
