Yerevan: The Armenian Defense Ministry announced that “violent battles” would take place on the front line in Nagorno Karabakh on Saturday, noting that Armenian separatists in the region managed to “stop a large-scale attack” by the Azerbaijani army.

Defense Ministry spokeswoman Shushan Stepanian wrote on Facebook that Nagorno Karabakh forces “succeeded in stopping the enemy’s large-scale attack,” referring to “continuous violent battles” in various sectors of the front.

The spokeswoman explained that “our forces launched a counterattack” in one of the sectors of the front line.

Violent clashes take place on Saturday for the seventh consecutive day between the forces of the separatist region backed by Armenia and the Azerbaijani army.

Since the fighting began on Sunday, only partial data on the number of casualties has been released, based on a total of 191 deaths, including 158 Karabakh soldiers, 14 Armenian civilians and 19 Azerbaijani civilians, as Baku does not announce its losses.

The Nagorno Karabakh region, which has an Armenian majority, declared secession from Azerbaijan in the early 1990s, sparking a war that caused 30,000 deaths. No peace agreement was signed between the two parties, although the front has been almost frozen since then, but has seen skirmishes from time to time (AFP).
