Accusations of “selectivity” of the law of amnesty for prisoners in Lebanon
Lebanese President Michel Aoun yesterday met with Maronite Patriarch Bechara Al-Rai, who had previously called for a reconciliation meeting between him and Prime Minister-designate Saad Hariri, while the focus is on the role of the sponsor. to facilitate the contract through the formation of the government.
It appeared that the venue for an expected new meeting between Aoun and Hariri was being discussed, after information conflicted over the proposed meeting venue, reflecting division and disagreement among the authorities concerned.
Although the Presidency of the Republic announced that the sponsor had offered to hold the meeting at the Patriarchate headquarters in Bkerke, former Minister Sajaan Qazi denied it, noting that the sponsor’s invitation was limited to the meeting without specifying the place. This step comes at a time when Hariri returned to Beirut yesterday, where he left after the two meetings he had with Aoun before Christmas failed.
Azzi confirmed to Al-Sharq al-Awsat that the sponsor did not present a different initiative than the previous one, and during his meeting with Aoun he repeated what he had previously told Hariri. Azzi explained that “Patriarch Al-Rahi assured me that his invitation was not related to the determination of any place to meet, but that the goal is only to urge the two parties and wish that they meet and put an end to the differences over the government”.
On the other hand, a member of the Democratic Rally (Socialist Party) bloc, Bilal Abdullah, warned against going ahead with the special amnesty project to alleviate overcrowding in prisons as an alternative to the general amnesty law that was aborted in Parliament during the past few months, warning of behind-the-scenes preparations to activate a selective project.
