Another mutated strain discovered in Nigeria

Yesterday (Thursday), the director of the African Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that another new mutated strain of the Corona virus had appeared in Nigeria, warning of the need for further research. This news came after Britain and South Africa recently detected two new strains of the virus that appear to be spreading more quickly, prompting further restrictions on travel with the two countries and disrupting markets.

“It is a separate strain from the British and South African strains,” John Nkengasung, director of the African Centers, told an online press conference from Addis Ababa. Nkengasung said that the Nigerian Center for Disease Control and Prevention and the African Center of Excellence in Genomics of Infectious Diseases in Nigeria will study more samples. He added: “In response to questions about the new virus, please give us some time … It is still too early.”

Nkengasung explained that the strain in South Africa is spreading rapidly and is likely to be responsible for most of the cases in the second wave of the virus outbreak in that country. He added that he saw no reason to apply travel restrictions in Africa due to the tension that was detected in Nigeria. Notably, Nigeria, the largest African country in terms of population of over 200 million, has seen far fewer corona cases than other countries on the continent.

Notably, South Africa recorded the highest cases of Coronavirus in Africa, with a total of 955,000 cases. And recently, the government reimposed strict restrictions to contain the second wave of the virus outbreak.

For its part, Nigeria registered 999 new confirmed cases of the emerging coronavirus during the last 24 hours, which is the second highest daily number of infections registered in the country. This comes after the decline in daily cases of infection in Nigeria for two consecutive days, after more than two weeks of the increase in the number of injuries in various parts of the country.

Health experts are expressing serious concerns about the recent resurgence of the infection, as they believe the matter may be more dangerous if citizens continue to violate security protocols. This brings the total number of infected people in Nigeria to 79,789, according to the latest data released by the Nigerian Center for Disease Control. The center added that four new deaths were recorded in the last 24 hours, bringing the total death toll since the start of the pandemic to 1231.

In addition, the French Presidency announced in a statement yesterday (Thursday) that President Emmanuel Macron, who tested positive for Covid-19 on the 17th of this month, “no longer suffers symptoms” and can thus end the isolation that began seven days ago .

The Elysee Palace said Macron suffered from a cough, high body temperature and muscle aches. Adding that “during the period of illness he was able to continue with his activities in the main current archives of our country and preside over councils and hold the meetings he had scheduled.” The Elysee did not specify whether Macron returned to the presidential palace in Paris or to the place where he intends to spend Christmas.
