An official and popular funeral for the late Saeb Erekat, before his passage through Jericho

On Wednesday noon, the funeral ceremony for the body of the Palestinian Liberation Organization secretary, Saeb Erekat, began in Ramallah, before it was transferred to the Jericho cemetery, after a military funeral was held in the Palestinian Presidency in Ramallah in the occupied West Bank.

The funeral procession left the Istishari Hospital in the suburb of al-Rihan, where yesterday the body was transported from the Israeli Hospital “Hadassah” in occupied Jerusalem, after announcing his death with the Coronavirus.

In addition, the body was transported before noon this afternoon for a military funeral to the headquarters of the Muqata, where the President of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, gave Erekat a farewell look, in the presence of officials of the presidency, government and Palestinian leaders.

The late Erekat’s funeral procession stopped in front of the Palestine Liberation Organization headquarters in Ramallah, where his office is located, and his colleagues, employees of the organization’s headquarters, gave their last farewell look.

The procession headed with a portable funeral to the city of Jericho, where he was born, and the Erekat family cast their last parting glance at the body, at the family home in the city.

And the mourners performed funeral prayers over the body, in the old Jericho mosque, before it was buried in the city’s cemetery known as “Al-Babai.”

The “Fatah” movement announced the death of Erekat (65 years old), yesterday Tuesday, in the Israeli hospital “Hadassah” in Jerusalem, as a result of the complications of his infection with the new Corona virus.

Erekat’s funeral ceremony coincides with the commemoration of the 16th anniversary of the death of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.

Earlier, the Palestinian presidency called Erekat, declaring mourning at half mast for 3 days, and President Mahmoud Abbas said that the death of the chief Palestinian negotiator was “a great loss for Palestine and our people.”
