The US space agency “NASA” announced that a small asteroid will pass from the side of the planet today, about 22 thousand kilometers from the surface of the earth.
According to a NASA statement, the asteroid will be closer to Earth than the orbit of the satellites, which are located about 36,000 km from the Earth’s surface.
The agency noted that the size of the named asteroid (2020 SW) is the size of a small school bus, ranging from 5 to 10 meters wide.
The asteroid will get closer to Earth and the asteroid will continue its journey around the sun, not returning to the vicinity of Earth until 2041, when it will fly much farther.
Asteroid 2020 SW was discovered on September 18 and follow-up observations of its orbital trajectory were confirmed with high precision, as a collision with Earth was ruled out.
“Although the asteroid is not on a collision course with Earth, if it were, the space rocks would almost certainly disintegrate in the atmosphere, turning into a bright meteorite known as a fireball,” the space agency said.
