Four sources, including two US officials, told Reuters on Thursday that the long-awaited move, which is likely to enrage Ankara and seriously complicate relations with the incoming administration of President-elect Joe Biden, may be announced at any time.
The sources explained to the agency that the sanctions will target the Turkish Presidency of Defense Industries and its head, Ismail Demir. Several sources said they expected the sanctions to be announced on Friday, but one of them said it could come at any time, perhaps Thursday.
The US State Department could change its plans and expand or reduce planned sanctions against Turkey, a NATO ally for decades. However, sources said the announcement of the sanctions in their current form is imminent.
The sources added that the United States, after waiting a long time for Turkey to change course in the face of American warnings about sanctions requirements under the law, is finally ready to act.
Russia delivered the S-400 surface-to-air missile systems last year, and Turkey tested them in October. Ankara said it will not be integrated into NATO systems and poses no threat, and called for the formation of a joint working group on this issue.
