The uproar caused by the murders of women in Algeria, finally, prompted a group of actresses to launch an awareness campaign on social media to combat violence against women, in an initiative that was accompanied by controversy from the beginning.

“We Algerian actresses are united against the phenomenon of feminicide and against all forms of violence that are exercised against them,” he said in an appeal published by the owners of the initiative on October 15, “We call everyone to union and solidarity to stop this violence. ” The actresses took an iconic photo that went viral on the internet. In it, more than twenty actresses from different generations, including Algerian screen lady Bahia Rachdi and rising star Suhaila Moallem, are dressed in black and holding hands, grieving 41 women who have been murdered since beginning of the year.
In the absence of a response from the authorities and in the face of this danger, the actresses use their fame to attract the attention of the public.
In this context, actress Salima Abada explained to “Agence France Presse” that “this campaign is aimed at everyone, men and women, and does not intend to criminalize Algerian men, but under the responsibility of all”. He emphasized that the campaign is positive despite some “misunderstandings it caused”, adding that “there is debate, anger and poison, and at least we have succeeded!”
Keep in mind that the actresses plan to stream an awareness video at a later stage.
The launch of the initiative was accompanied by a controversy caused by a widespread video clip of another actress who participated in the campaign, Mounia Ben Fegoul. The actress, who hosts a program on a private television channel, posted this video on Instagram this month, commenting on the brutal murder of 19-year-old Shaima after she was beaten, raped and burned alive near Algiers. In this video, Ben Fagoul criticizes the men who justified his killer: “There is no excuse for rapists. That was rape! She was not okay! “With the announcement of her opposition to the death penalty, the actress called for the corporal punishment of people convicted of sexual crimes, pointing out the need
“Do not raise children in taboos” to break the silence, highlighting that it is necessary to set a good example for young people talking about these issues.
Faced with the criticism campaign facing this video, many people, including the singer Amal Zan, came out to defend its owner. Zan confirmed to Social Media his support for “Monia in these hard times”, considering that this controversy “shows how sick our society is.”
It should be noted that in the absence of official statistics on violence against women in Algeria, the number of complaints registered in 2019 amounted to more than 7,000, according to figures from the General Directorate of National Security.
