A member of the United States House of Representatives from Alaska, Don Young, 87, announced that he had been infected with the emerging corona virus, after he ridiculed the virus and described it as a “beer virus” earlier, according to Reuters.

Young’s infection appeared when the Alaska governor warned Thursday of the risk of health facilities filling up due to the rapid spread of the virus across the state.

Young tweeted on his Twitter account, confirming that he was infected with the virus.

Young is the only representative in the United States Parliament for the state of Alaska.

“I feel empowered, follow proper procedures and work from home in Alaska,” he tweeted.

“I ask for privacy at this time,” he added.

In March, Young said that anxiety about Covid-19 “stemmed primarily from hysteria.”

“I call it the beer virus. What do you think?” Young said in a speech at a senior center in Palmer, Alaska, referring to a beer with the name Corona.

“In any case, he is attacking us elders … and I am one of you,” Young said.

“As a nation and as a state, we have to go on with our daily activities,” he added.

And the state governor, Mike Donlevi, had sent an emergency message to the state’s phones with a link to a video warning of an “escalation” of Corona infections.

“Regardless of what you believe about the virus, the facts are the facts. (Cases requiring hospital care) and sick healthcare workers are reaching unsustainable milestones,” the Republican governor said in the video.
