Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi discussed in Ankara on Thursday with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan the strengthening of economic cooperation between their countries and Turkish investment in Iraq.
During the joint press conference between the two parties, Erdogan said that his country “will continue to support Iraq in its war against terrorist organizations, as well as supporting all components of Iraq and preserving its territorial integrity,” noting that Turkey and Iraq has a unit of consideration in the fight against terrorism.
“We highlight the need to find a platform to increase the volume of trade between the two countries,” he said. He also referred to the need to use water properly and said that “water will not be a point of contention, but a point of cooperation between the two countries.”
In turn, Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi confirmed that Iraq hopes to have more relations with the Turkish side.
Al-Kazemi said at the joint press conference with Erdogan that “Iraq is working to strengthen its relations with its neighbors and will not be a pivot against another,” noting that “Iraq is confident in the ability of Turkish companies to operate successfully. in Iraq and our doors are open to Turkish businessmen. ”
He added that “we are working to arrive at a joint action plan in the water archive,” explaining that the Supreme Council for Strategic Cooperation between the two countries has been activated.
Al-Kazemi pointed out that his country will not enter any regional or international axis against any other party.
He also noted that “Iraq condemns any action launched from its lands to threaten the Turkish lands, and two days ago there was an attack that our Peshmerga armed forces responded to, and we reject terrorism and cooperate with Turkey in its combat.”
He continued: “Today, we signed an agreement with the Turkish side to cancel double taxation, and we look forward to Erdogan’s visit to Baghdad.”
Today, Thursday, Iraq signed two agreements with the Turkish side, in the fiscal and cultural sphere, in the presence of Al-Kazemi and Erdogan. Where Planning Minister Khaled Battal Al-Najm signed an agreement to avoid double taxation with the Turkish side.
Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein and his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu signed a cultural cooperation agreement between the two countries.
He indicated that they also discussed ways to improve economic cooperation between Baghdad and Ankara, as well as inviting Turkish companies to invest in Iraq in various sectors.
The Turkish Ambassador to Iraq, Fatih Yilmaz, had recently revealed that the volume of trade between Turkey and Iraq had increased to $ 15.8 billion in 2019 from $ 13 billion in 2018, indicating that the two countries are aiming to increase their volume to $ 20 billion annually.
Most of it passes through two border crossings located in Dohuk Governorate in Kurdistan Region, namely Ibrahim Al-Khalil – Fishkhabur and Zira – Uzumlu.
Previously, Iraq and Turkey formed a strategic cooperation council between them in 2008, and in 2009 48 agreements were signed in the fields of security, energy and various economic aspects, as Iraq contributes to supplying Turkey with its oil needs in approximately 15% of your total needs.
