The first round of negotiations to demarcate the maritime borders between Lebanon and Israel ended nearly an hour after they were launched at the headquarters of the United Nations force in southern Lebanon, according to the National Media Agency in the Lebanon.

“The first round of negotiations on the demarcation of the borders between the Lebanese and Israeli sides has ended … as long as the second round is on the 28th of this year,” the agency quoted him as saying.

A final statement on the meeting, which was attended by representatives of the United Nations and the United States, who play the role of mediators, in addition to the two delegations, has yet to be issued.

Today, Wednesday morning, the first round of negotiations was launched to demarcate the maritime borders between Lebanon and Israel, under the auspices of the United Nations and with US mediation.

Negotiations are taking place at UNIFIL headquarters in Ras al-Naqoura, with the mediation of the United States represented by Deputy Foreign Minister David Schenker, who arrived in Beirut last night, and under the auspices of United Nations represented by its special coordinator in Lebanon Jan Kubis.

A UN source told the German news agency (dpa) that “the talks are taking place inside a conference room of the Italian contingent of UN peacekeepers,” without giving further details.

According to the National Media Agency, Naqoura is witnessing strict security measures taken by the Lebanese army and UNIFIL, and 24-hour patrols that will accompany the first session of the negotiations.

The demarcation negotiations in the first meeting between the Lebanese and Israeli delegations will have a “formal and exploratory nature.”

The Lebanese delegation is made up of four people, headed by Pilot Brigadier General Bassam Yassin, and includes among its members Colonel Maritime Staff Mazen Basbous, a member of the Administration of the Petroleum Sector in Lebanon and of the Order of February, in addition to the expert in maritime affairs, Najib Masih.

The Israeli delegation is made up of the Director General of the Ministry of Energy, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s diplomatic adviser and the head of the Army Strategic Affairs Department.
