London, United Kingdom (CNN) – British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced that a second blanket lockdown will be applied in England, beginning on Thursday and ending on December 2, coinciding with the escalating rate of coronavirus infection.
The British prime minister, at a press conference Saturday night after a cabinet meeting, said he would present his proposal to impose a second national lockdown on England on lawmakers in the House of Commons on Monday.
On Wednesday, lawmakers are expected to debate and vote on Johnson’s proposal. If approved, the lockdown will be imposed across England from Thursday.
The national closure will include the closure of bars and restaurants (excluding takeaway and home delivery), entertainment venues and non-essential shops, in England only, due to objections to its implementation in the UK.
Under the new rules, residents will only be allowed to leave their homes for specific reasons, including education, work (if you can’t work from home), outdoor sports, medical reasons, or food and essentials.
Schools, universities and nurseries will remain open.
