A third round of negotiations to demarcate the maritime borders between Lebanon and Israel

The third round of technical negotiations on the demarcation of the maritime borders between Lebanon and Israel took place today (Wednesday) under the auspices of the United Nations and US mediation, without announcing any progress since its launch in the middle of last month, according to the French Press Agency.
The two delegations met for hours at a United Nations Force in South Lebanon (UNIFIL) border point in the city of Naqoura, in the presence of United Nations representatives and a US diplomat who is facilitating negotiations between the two. parts.
The meeting agreed to hold a new session on December 2, according to the official National Media Agency in Lebanon.
Negotiations began on October 14 between two countries considered at war and aspiring to share oil resources in regional waters, after years of mediations undertaken by Washington, and then a second round was held that included two sessions on October 28 and 29. same month.
The negotiations mainly concern a marine area that extends to about 860 square kilometers, according to a map sent in 2011 to the United Nations, but Lebanon later considered that it was based on erroneous estimates.
In 2018, Lebanon signed the first contract to explore gas and oil in two blocks of its territorial waters. One of them, known as “Block No. 9”, is located in the part disputed with Israel. And therefore; Lebanon has no option to operate in this territory except after the borders are demarcated.
