The Information Office of the Presidency of the Republic issued the following statement:
The news of the distribution of a quantity of Ceylon tea to the families of the soldiers of the Republican Guard Brigade provoked false responses as part of a programmed campaign on social media, which, as usual, was aimed at distorting the reality and exploit it in an ambiguous way.
Therefore, to be clear, and in order to avoid cheap exploitation of the news for well-known reasons and objectives, it is important that the Information Office clarifies the following:
First: On August 11, 2020, the Sri Lankan Embassy in Beirut informed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the arrival of a diplomatic shipment to Beirut that includes the following:
One thousand special food packages to distribute for free.
– 1675 kilograms of Ceylon tea, “a gift to His Excellency President General Michel Aoun to express solidarity and friendship between Sri Lanka and Lebanon.”
Second: The Army Command informed the departments of the Republican Palace of the arrival of the cargo at Rafic Hariri International Airport on August 14, 2020, and requested the receipt of the part related to the gift from the President of the Republic, and this was made according to the rules.
Third: During the visit of the Sri Lankan ambassador to the Baabda Palace on August 24, the President of the Republic thanked her for presenting the donation consisting of food and tea, but an error mentioned in the news showed that the thanks were only for the gift of tea. Later, President Aoun sent a letter of thanks to his Sri Lankan counterpart.
Fourth: The departments of the Presidency received the gift of tea and it was distributed to the soldiers of the Republican Guard Brigade in accordance with the custom of the President of the Republic of distributing gifts of food and supplies that come to the soldiers of the brigade.
When the Information Office of the Presidency of the Republic reports these events, it hopes to kill off the campaign promoters through trumpets and social networking sites, surprising how frequent some commentators become, that the soldiers of the Guard Brigade Republican got a box of tea, knowing that among them were those who were damaged as a result of the explosion in the port of Beirut, like other citizens.
