A British court sentenced three smugglers to prison, who were arrested after a daring and unconventional attempt to smuggle a family of five into the back of a truck.

Leonten Bador (37 years old), Maria Mirabella Polomiz (22 years old) and Marcel Ionot Frant (27 years old) were arrested after Border Force officers searched their red Mercedes van in the international port of Harwich, Essex, North East England, last February 16.

Searching the car on arrival on a ferry from the Netherlands, security personnel found 3 men and two women, all Afghans, having cleverly hidden them inside the back of the truck.

Four of the five were hiding behind a fake screen between the driver’s cab and the rear of the truck, while the fifth was crammed behind a row of seats, according to Sky News.

The Home Office revealed that holes were drilled to allow air to enter, while tools were used to close the fake screen.

The three smugglers, all with Romanian citizenship and no fixed address in the UK, have pleaded guilty to collaborating in the crime of illegal immigration.

They were sentenced to 30 months in prison after a hearing in Chelmsford Crown Court on August 24.

Frant was also sentenced to nine months in prison for possessing a forged driver’s license.

British Home Secretary Priti Patel promised that “human trafficking will not be tolerated in any way.”

“This was a reckless attempt to bypass our border controls and anyone who doubts the consequences of such actions should bear it in mind: they will be arrested and caught behind bars,” he added.

The Interior Ministry said the Afghan family’s cases are handled in accordance with immigration rules.
