In a concerning development, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Tuesday that Germany will extend general isolation measures until April 18 and asked citizens to stay home for five days during the Easter holidays, in an attempt for controlling a third wave of the Covid-19 pandemic.
In late-night talks, Merkel pressed the leaders of the sixteen German states to take a tougher stance to combat the epidemic, revisiting plans agreed this month to gradually reopen the economy, following a sharp rise in the infection rate.
“We are just now facing a new pandemic,” Merkel said during a news conference. “Modified British strain prevails.”
“Basically, we are facing a new virus of the same type, but with very different characteristics. It is more deadly, more infectious and contagious for longer,” he added.
