A large fire broke out in the port of Beirut, more than a month after the massive explosion on August 4, which killed about 200 people.

The Army Command stated that the fire broke out in an oil and tire depot in the free market and that extinguishing operations began with Army helicopters and civil defense personnel.

The army took strict measures in the vicinity of the Beirut port and traffic was diverted from the naval base to the intersection of Burj Al-Ghazal and Haddad to keep citizens away from the area.

In turn, the governor of Beirut, Marwan Abboud, asked citizens “not to go near the port of Beirut to preserve their safety and not to hinder the work of the firefighters.”

The Director General of Civil Defense, Brigadier General Raymond Khattar, asked the tank owners in Beirut to go immediately to the port to supply water to the fire trucks. He told LBCI: “We have not yet brought the fire under control and we are asking the port administration to determine the nature of the materials in the warehouse to preserve the integrity of the items.”

In addition, the general director of the port of Beirut, Bassem Al-Qaisi, said in an interview with “LBCI” that “the fire occurred in the free market in the building of a company that imports oil for frying.”

The secretary general of the Red Cross, George Kittana, indicated that there was a case of suffocation and she was treated at the port.

MTV sources reported that one of the containers at berth number 10 in the port of Beirut contains sulfur, which is still in place and has not been removed despite repeated fires in the port.

It is noteworthy that two days ago, with the knowledge of the army and the presence of civil defense teams, the landfills and the remains of the explosion in the port were burned, generating fear among the residents of Beirut.
