Authorities said dozens of severe wildfires sparked by winds broke out in trees and towns in West Coast states Thursday, destroying hundreds of homes and killing at least eight people.

In the past 48 hours, police said, four people died in fires in California, three died in Oregon and a one-year-old boy died in Washington state. Thousands faced eviction orders in all three states.

Oregon has suffered the brunt of nearly 100 major wildfires that swept through western states, with about 3,000 firefighters fighting nearly 36 wildfires, Reuters reported.

In central Oregon, search and rescue teams have entered burned communities like Detroit, as firefighters lead residents on a dramatic escape from the mountain after military helicopters fail to evacuate the city.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office said a 12-year-old boy was found dead with his dog in a burning car, and his grandmother is believed to have died after a fire engulfed an area near Lyon, about 50 miles away. (80 km) south of Portland.

To the south, most of the 82,000-strong town of Medford has had to evacuate or prepare to evacuate as the north and south burst into flames.
