After two nights of riots and looting, authorities in the US city of Philadelphia imposed a curfew on Wednesday from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.
The riots took place during violent protests over the murder of a black man by police bullets.
The move, announced by authorities on the city’s website, comes as Republican President Donald Trump, seeking to win a second term in elections scheduled for next Tuesday, blamed the Democrat-controlled City Council for the riots.
“What I see is horrifying and frankly the mayor or whoever is allowing people to protest and loot without ending them is also horrible,” Trump said.
And Philadelphia, which is a stronghold of Democrats, has been on high alert since violent demonstrations that erupted in protest over the murder of a 27-year-old black man named Walter Wallace Jr. appeared Monday in the West Philadelphia neighborhood, after two policemen shot him with several bullets, while they were not exposed. An imminent danger, according to a video circulating on social media.
The functions of the two police officers involved in the murder of Walter Wallace Jr. have been suspended pending the results of the investigation by the police and the local prosecutor.
National Guard forces are scheduled to be deployed to Philadelphia, the Pennsylvania state capital, but it is unclear how many of these forces are there yet.
And Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf confirmed Tuesday night that he had requested help to restore calm in the Pennsylvania capital, one of the crucial states in the presidential battle between Trump and his Democratic rival, Joe Biden.
