Former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger has warned that the world could slide into a catastrophe similar to World War I.
Kissinger said during the opening session of the Bloomberg New Economy Forum: “The incoming administration of President-elect Joe Biden must act as quickly as possible to reestablish lines of communication with China, with which relations were strained during the years of government. President Donald Trump, or the risk of a crisis may escalate Military conflict.
Kissinger added: “If there is no basis for cooperation, the world will slide into a catastrophe similar to World War I.”
Kissinger considered that currently available military technologies would make such a crisis more difficult to control than those of earlier times.
He stressed the need for the Biden administration to act swiftly to restore lines of communication with China that soured during the years of the “Trump” government or risk a crisis that could escalate into a military conflict.
“The United States and China are increasingly immersed in confrontation, and they are practicing their diplomacy in a confrontational way … and the danger is that some crises will occur that will go beyond rhetoric to a real military conflict,” Kissinger said in an interview with John Micklethwait, editor-in-chief of Bloomberg News.
Kissinger expressed hope that the common threat posed by the “Covid-19” epidemic will provide an opportunity for political discussions between the two countries when Biden takes office on January 20.
Kissinger said: “If you can see ‘Covid 19’ as a warning, which means that in practice each country treats it independently, but the long-term solution has to be something global … It should be treated as a lesson” .
