Azerbaijan is preparing to regain control of the Kalbgar area in the vicinity of the Nagorno Karabakh region. In return, the Armenian State Security Service announced that it had foiled the coup attempt and the assassination of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

The Al-Jazeera correspondent in the vicinity of Karabakh reported that Azerbaijan will regain control of the Kalbgar region in the north of the region today, Sunday, after the withdrawal of Armenian forces under the ceasefire agreement.

Our correspondent added that Baku has formed an operational group that will manage the restored areas, fix the security conditions in them, and prepare them to receive the Azeri population displaced almost 30 years ago.

On the other hand, the cameras of the correspondents saw many Armenian residents burning their houses before leaving, after they took everything they could take, so that Azeris could not live in them.

“It is the last day, and tomorrow the Azeri soldiers will come here, they will all burn their houses today,” an AFP correspondent told a resident of Sharkhtar village as he burned down his house.

International law recognizes that the region is part of Azerbaijan, before Armenians inhabited it after the war that broke out in the 1990s.

For his part, Hikmat Hajiyev, assistant to the Azerbaijani president, said that “Baku will invite the relevant United Nations organizations to assess and account for the damage caused by the Armenian attacks in and around Karabakh.”

Speaking by the Azerbaijan News Agency, Hajiyev added that they will give a new home to all Azeri families who lost their home during the war in and around Karabakh region.

Coup in Armenia

In a related context, the Armenian State Security Service announced that it had thwarted an attempted coup against the power and assassinated Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

A statement from the Armenian State Security Service said that the former head of the service, Artur Vanitsyan, the former President of the Republic Serge Sargesyan, the head of the Republican Party and a party leader Dashnak Tsotiyon were arrested; On charges of conspiracy to assassinate the prime minister and a coup against power.

The arrests also included several leaders and members of opposition parties, as well as the commander of a volunteer military unit, accused of direct participation in the operation.

Armenian intelligence confirmed that its forces found large quantities of weapons, explosives and ammunition from the fighting in the Karabakh region at the home of a person carrying anti-government ideas in the “Syunik” region.

He added that this person agreed with some politicians in Armenia and the Karabakh region to kill Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and then take power using those weapons.

Armenians held demonstrations against Pashinyan after their admission of Azerbaijan’s defeat in the Karabakh region.

On November 10, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that Azerbaijan and Armenia had reached an agreement stipulating a ceasefire in Karabakh, with the forces of the two countries stationed in their current areas of control.

The agreement also foresees that Azerbaijan will regain control of the 3 provinces occupied by Armenia within a specific period of time, which are like Al-Baggar on November 15, Agdam on November 20 and Lachin on December 1.

Putin’s contacts

In turn, Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed by phone with the leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia the implementation of the ceasefire agreement in Karabakh, and demanded the protection of Christian holy sites after their return to control of Azerbaijan.

According to a statement issued by the Kremlin, Putin called Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, who expressed their satisfaction at observing the ceasefire in Karabakh.

The statement added that Putin stressed the importance of preserving Christian churches and monasteries in areas that would return to Azerbaijan’s control, and that Aliyev expressed his understanding of this matter and said that the Azerbaijani side will act in accordance with this principle.

Meanwhile, the Russian Defense Ministry announced the start of the return of refugees to Stepanakert, the capital of the Karabakh region, after previously announcing that the Russian Military Police had patrols in the northern and southern regions of the region.

The ministry said that the two parties to the conflict are committed to the ceasefire regime and that Russia is in constant contact with the General Staff in both Armenia and Azerbaijan, to avoid further clashes in the region.
