Russian forces deployed in the capital of the Nagorno Karabakh region as part of the peacekeeping forces, to control the unstable situation after the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan for months, which resulted in the death of at least 4,000 people.
Russian President Vladimir Putin confirmed on Friday that his country has achieved a total cessation of fighting in Karabakh.
“We transferred 1,100 soldiers to Karabakh as part of the peacekeepers,” he said.
On Friday morning, Russian peacekeepers seized control of the outskirts of Stepanakert, the capital of the Nagorno Karabakh region, and guarded the road leading to the nearby line of contact between Armenian and Azerbaijani forces, according to a AFP journalist.
Dozens of soldiers and at least three armored vehicles were deployed at a checkpoint at the south-west exit of the city controlled by Armenian forces, on the road leading to the city of Shusha, some ten kilometers away, which was controlled by the Azerbaijani forces last week.
A Russian flag flew over the place where Armenian soldiers helped regulate the movement of vehicles.
In addition, one of the Russian soldiers told AFP: “We check the passports and make sure that there are no weapons in the vehicles, without obstructing them.”
Five kilometers to the south, on the same road, another Russian checkpoint was installed, backed by armored vehicles.
The situation was calm throughout the region, while Russian and Armenian soldiers chatted quietly. Some passengers in the vehicles crossing the checkpoint even offered bread, sweets or cigarettes to the Russian soldiers, who printed the first two letters of the phrase “soldiers of peace” in Russian on their uniforms and the flags of their armored vehicles.
Earlier in the week, Armenia and Azerbaijan signed, under the auspices of Russia, a ceasefire agreement ending the conflict that began in late September in Karabakh.
This agreement confirms the significant progress that Azerbaijan has made and provides for the transfer of additional territories to Baku.
While awaiting the full deployment of Russian forces and the reopening of the Lachin pass that connects Armenia with the enclave, the only road leading to Nagorno-Karabakh is the one that passes north of the pocket, through the Kalbjar region. scheduled for delivery on Sunday to Azerbaijan.
