Tahrir Square in Egypt

Security sources in Egypt said a man set himself on fire in Cairo’s Tahrir Square on Thursday and was being treated for burns suffered at a hospital in the capital.

A source from the Cairo Security Directorate stated that the man is under surveillance at a local hospital, where he told officials that he works at the Central Audit Organization.

Reuters reported that there were no official comments on the incident yet.

In video recordings circulating on social media, the man is shown setting himself on fire while walking down a street and later in the square, complaining of alleged corruption.

The man, dressed in a jacket and tie, started screaming before setting his clothes on fire.

Another video, taken from a balcony overlooking the plaza, showed security guards and pedestrians running to put out the fire with water and clothing.

Authorities are tightening security in Tahrir Square, which was the center of the mass demonstrations that toppled former President Hosni Mubarak in 2011.
