The Ecuadorian presidency announced yesterday that President Lenin Moreno halved his salary and the salaries of members of the government due to the crisis caused by the emerging Corona virus.

The Presidency said that it was decided by decree that “the salary of the President of the Republic, the Vice President of the Republic, the ministers and vice ministers be reduced by fifty percent.”

He explained that “the decrease in state revenues as a result of the Covid-19 crisis had negative effects on the country’s economy, and for this reason it is necessary to reduce the salaries of officials.”

On April 12, Moreno announced on Twitter his intention to reduce his salary and that of other top government officials, and the measure formally took effect after his signature on May 8.

Previously, the president’s monthly salary exceeded the equivalent of five thousand dollars, while the vice president was paid $ 4,800, the ministers 4,400 and the vice-ministers $ 4,200, knowing that the minimum wage in Ecuador was $ 400.

These cuts, announced at the highest level in the country, should lead to a general review of wages in the public sector, because there is a law in Ecuador that states that no employee can receive a monthly salary higher than the president’s salary.

According to the latest figure, Ecuador recorded 2,9071 cases of Covid-19, including 1,717 confirmed deaths, and authorities recorded more than 1,912 deaths suspected of being related to the virus.
