Today, Wednesday, at the United Nations headquarters in the town of Naqoura, in southern Lebanon, a new round of indirect technical negotiations began between Lebanon and Israel, to demarcate the “maritime border between them” with US mediation and supervision of the UN.
Lebanon claims about two thousand square kilometers within the area that Israel considers its exclusive economic zone, while Tel Aviv seeks to obtain about 860 square kilometers within Lebanese territorial waters.
The Lebanese delegation had confirmed in a previous round of negotiations that it was negotiating on the basis of international law and the Armistice Agreement of 1949.
Negotiations between the two parties began on October 14 and have made no progress so far.
The area, claimed by Lebanon, includes part of the “Karish” field in which the Greek company “Energian” operates.
An Israeli source familiar with the negotiations said that the Tel Aviv delegation proposed a “line north of the borders of the disputed area,” and emphasized that “the line south of the area will not be discussed,” as Lebanon proposes.
And the Israeli Ministry of Energy had published the text of a letter it sent to the Greek company, in which it confirmed that “there is no change or possibility of change in the status of Israeli territorial waters south of the disputed area, including of course the Karish and Tanin fields. “
On the other hand, the Lebanese News reported in its Wednesday edition that “the demarcation file threatens to reject the Israeli negotiating delegation … which the Lebanese side took in the last two sessions, and provoked an anger that led to the enemy to agitate illegal and unfeasible options. “
The newspaper cited well-informed sources who affirmed that “the chances of success or not of these negotiations have been equalized”, explaining that “while the two parties were going to negotiate an area of 860 kilometers in dispute, new lines began to proliferate, after for the enemy to decide that Lebanon’s demand was a provocation, and he surrendered in return. ” The right to offer new lines. “
It should be noted that, in 2018, Lebanon signed the first contract to explore for gas and oil in two areas of its territorial waters, one of which is located in the part disputed with Israel, which means that working in this area forces to negotiate with Tel Aviv to demarcate the borders.
