French President Emmanuel Macron stressed on Tuesday that “terrorism represents a European reality, to which we must provide a coordinated and rapid response.”
“We support the creation of a European Internal Security Council,” Macron said.
The French president stressed the need for Europe to “reconsider the open-border Schengen area.”
France’s relationship with the Arab and Islamic worlds has witnessed tensions in the recent period following the reissue of insulting cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad.
And in the context of the murder of a history professor, French President Emmanuel Macron called on ministers concerned about security issues in the country to take urgent measures to combat terrorism.
In a crime that shocked France, a young man named Abdullah Anzuroff, a history teacher, Samuel Patti, 47, was murdered outside a preparatory school in the northern Paris suburb of Conflans-Saint-Honorine last month.
A police source said: “The attack occurred after the teacher showed his students cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad.”
The French Antiterrorist Prosecutor’s Office opened an investigation into the case, in which 11 people were arrested, confirming that the 18-year-old perpetrator was of Chechen origin and had refugee status in France.
