Following the issuance of his sentence in the case of the murder of Prime Minister Rafik Hariri about three months ago, the Prosecutor of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon requested life imprisonment for Salim Ayyash.
On August 18, the Special Tribunal for Lebanon had formally indicted the defendant Ayyash, one of the four Hezbollah members it indicted in the Hariri case.

In today’s session, Tuesday, the judges heard “the oral arguments of the Attorney General, the defense attorney who represents the interests of Salim Ayyash, and the legal representatives of the affected participants who participate on the sanction that will be imposed.”

Prosecutor Nigel Bafoas told the court: “The harshest sentence in the court is life imprisonment,” indicating that the prosecution believes that “this is the only fair and appropriate trial.”
He added: “Why life imprisonment? These are very serious crimes … This is the most serious terrorist attack that takes place on Lebanese territory.”
The prosecution is also investigating the possibility of confiscating the property of Ayyash, who was convicted in absentia.
Ayyash faces other charges. In September 2019, the International Court charged him with “terrorism and murder” for his involvement in three other attacks against politicians between 2004 and 2005.
