The pharmaceutical company, “Pfizer,” said Monday that an early look at the data for its Corona virus vaccine shows that it is more than 90% effective.
The so-called interim analysis examined the first 94 confirmed cases of “Covid-19” among more than 43,000 volunteers, who received two doses of the vaccine or a placebo. And it found that less than 10% of the infections occurred in participants who received the vaccine. And more than 90% of the cases have occurred in people who took a placebo.
“Pfizer” explained that the vaccine provided protection seven days after the second dose and 28 days after the initial dose of the vaccine, while the ultimate goal of the trial was to reach 164 confirmed coronavirus cases.
In a press release, “Pfizer” indicated that it plans to obtain an emergency use permit from the US Food and Drug Administration shortly after observing volunteers for two months after receiving their second dose of the vaccine, and expects to reach this indicator by the third week of November.
The trial of the third phase of the “Pfizer” vaccine, which was carried out with the German partner “Biontech”, registered 43,538 participants as of July 27. As of Sunday, 38,955 volunteers had received a second dose of the vaccine. The company says that 42% of international testing sites and 30% of US testing sites have volunteers of various racial and ethnic backgrounds.
