Last Saturday, the US media announced that Joe Biden had won the US election to be the 46th president.
Since then, the US media began to nickname him with the term “president-elect”, although the results were not officially released.
And the media, including “CNN” and the Associated Press, said that Biden earned more than 2,070 in the electoral college, qualifying him to move into the White House on December 20.
But what does “the president-elect” mean? Does it give you any authority even before the official opening ceremony?
President-elect is a descriptive term, not an official position, and does not grant authority to its incumbent until his inauguration on January 20, according to a report published by the “VOA” network website.
Despite this, Biden has already begun considering key appointments in his next administration, and the media has reported that he is heading to reverse a number of decisions and policies by Republican President Donald Trump.
According to Reuters, Biden’s campaign urged the Public Services Administration to agree to a formal transfer of power, despite Trump’s refusal to acknowledge his opponent’s victory in the presidential election thus far.
The Public Utilities Administration is an independent federal agency responsible for facilitating logistical and administrative matters for the US government, and is currently chaired by Emily Murphy, who has been appointed by current President Trump.
Biden’s campaign warned that the national security and economic interests of the United States depend largely for their stability on a smooth and peaceful transition of power.
If Biden is confirmed to have officially won the election after the electoral college decision, he will begin planning to take office, but cannot make any official decisions, and Trump will remain president until his term officially ends in January.
It takes weeks to validate the results
Biden still has several weeks before it is approved by election officials in each state, and then members of the 538-member electoral college will choose the new president, to determine the actual winner in the election.
Some states are still counting votes.
Biden’s transition website posted four priorities he would work on entering the White House: Crown, economic recovery, racial equality, and climate change.
The site read: “The team that is meeting will face these challenges from day one,” referring to January 20, 2021.
