Cities – American elections: court battles … and armed demonstrations

The president of the United States, Donald Trump, said that “if the votes are counted legally, then winning the elections will be inevitable”, in his favor, adding: “We won all the legal votes that were counted.”

Trump claimed in a speech from the White House on Thursday night that he won the election unless he was “stolen,” adding: “We will not allow corruption to steal the election results.”

He denounced that some states “do not want” their observers to see the scrutiny process, which has been repeated repeatedly since the day of the elections. He said detection centers are being covered to keep observers away from what is going on inside them. “We have won historic records” and “we are on the right track to win Arizona,” he added.

He noted that people who are not eligible to vote cast their vote in elections and said: “Our goal is to uphold the integrity of the elections and voters will not be allowed to remain silent.” He added: “There are a number of confusing election-related irregularities across the country.”

For his part, Democratic candidate Joe Biden assured his supporters Thursday that the election results would appear “very soon” and would give him “without a doubt” a victory over Trump. He told reporters in his hometown of Wilmington, Delaware: “I ask everyone to remain calm. The process is going as it should, qualifying is ongoing and we will know the outcome very soon.”

“We still feel very good about the current situation. We have no doubt that with the end of the vote count, our victory, Senator (Kamala) Harris and I will be announced,” he added.

The words of Trump and Biden come at a time when the results of the elections that took place on Tuesday for the results of the votes in Georgia, Pennsylvania, Arizona and Nevada are still pending. With final results looming, Trump leads in Pennsylvania, Biden leads in Arizona and the results are closely matched in Georgia.

Trump’s legal team is waging a legal battle to stop the counting of votes, but these legal efforts have failed in the US state of Nevada to stop the counting of postal ballots in Las Vegas.

According to a document filed on appeal with the state Supreme Court, the campaign, the local Republican Party, Democrats, and state attorneys reached an agreement requiring Clark County election officials to provide “additional monitoring access” in a Las Vegas vote counting site. A Qadrali judge in Michigan also rejected a request from Trump’s legal team objecting to the lack of sufficient observers for the vote count.

On Election Day, the state Supreme Court refused to stop the count, in light of the state judge’s decision not to stop grappling with postal ballots in Las Vegas and Clark County, the Democratic stronghold in the red status.

Nevada Democrats accuse Republicans of trying to suppress the vote in the most diverse region of the state. Members of the Trump campaign said they intend to file another complaint with the Las Vegas District Court to try to stop counting what one member described as “invalid votes.”

In context, election officials in several U.S. states said they were concerned for the safety of their employees, amid a series of threats and rallies by angry protesters outside their doors, which were sparked by accusations of Trump of widespread fraud.

Groups of Trump supporters gathered at vote-counting sites in Phoenix, Detroit and Philadelphia, denouncing preliminary vote-counting results that showed Biden ahead of his Republican rival, or garnering more votes. The protests were neither violent nor very large, but local officials were distraught by the crowd and raised concerns about the ongoing allegations.

On Thursday, about 100 Trump supporters gathered outside the Maricopa County Electoral Center in Phoenix, some of them carrying rifles and pistols. Authorities put up barriers in the center to create a “free speech zone” and keep the entrance to the building open.

And in Atlanta, nearly 100 Trump supporters gathered outside the State Farm Arena as ballots were counted. Several Atlanta police officers monitored the event.

Meanwhile, Facebook has banned a large group called “Stop Theft” that Trump supporters are using to organize protests against the vote count. Some members called for violence, while many claimed that Democrats were stealing the elections.
