Judge Faisal Makki set a precedent with his decision to seize the funds of SGBL President Antoun Sehnaoui, members of the bank’s board of directors and bank funds, in the context of the lawsuit filed by Jordanian businessman Talal Abu Ghazaleh against the bank that refused to transfer his $ 23 million worth of money to his accounts in Jordan. And instead he gave her a bank check for the amount. This decision sets a precedent for hundreds of depositors to file lawsuits against banks to recover their deposits.

The head of Beirut’s Implementation Department, Judge Mekki, said that members of the board of directors of the Société Générale and its president are responsible for the wrong decisions they made to make high-risk investments in a corrupt and failed state. According to judicial sources, the seizure request was submitted by Abu Ghazaleh agents two months ago, but the judge studied it for a long time before making this decision. The judge proceeded to consider the decision of the bank’s board of directors to hand over the citizens’ deposits to the state in the form of debts, a decision that they have personal responsibility, for which he placed the seizure of their private money to compensate for the damage caused. to the depositor. On the other hand, sources from the SGBL revealed that bank agents rushed to place a bank check with a value of more than one million dollars, as a guarantee for the plaintiff Abu Ghazaleh, who stated that he estimated that he lost interest because he could not transfer his money, in more than a million dollars. The bank has placed this guarantee to release the seizure of funds and real estate from the members of the Board of Directors, pending the verification of the plaintiff’s claim, indicating that the seizure is supposed to be lifted in a few days. Sources indicated that she gave Abu Ghazaleh all her money under a bank check as soon as he claimed, considering this is the right of the legal bank!
In the facts of the court decision, Abu Ghazaleh, in the agency of the attorney general, Philip Maalouf, filed a lawsuit with the Beirut Civil Court of First Instance against SGBL and the president and members of its board of directors to demand compensation and interest for funds worth $ 23 million that SGBL refused to transfer to its Jordanian accounts. The plaintiff considered that the defendants had committed serious professional errors, represented by investing the depositors’ money in high-risk bonds, and in doing so, they would have violated the Commerce Law and the Monetary and Credit Law. Abu Ghazaleh submitted a request for the preventive seizure of the bank’s funds, as well as the funds of its president and members of its board of directors. As a result of the request, Judge Faisal Makki issued a decision authorizing the release of precautionary seizures on more than 180 properties belonging to SGBL Bank and for each of its chairman of the board, Antoun Nabil Sehnaoui, and members of the board of directors.
It should be noted that the SGBL bank agent deposited a bank check in the amount of the amounts owed by the judge’s record, noting that the bank’s appeal requires an objection before the judge himself. After the judge’s decision is issued and the objection decided, the decision is appealed and then appealed.
