Lebanese Finance Minister in the interim government, Ghazi Wazni, said the deadline for submitting criminal investigation data on the Lebanese Central Bank has been extended by 3 months.
After his meeting with President Aoun, Wazni stressed that the criminal audit is a reform step par excellence and noted that Aoun highlighted the importance of adhering to it.
This came during a meeting in Baabda headed by President Aoun and in the presence of the Minister of Finance, that steps are being taken to guarantee the rights of former United Nations Development Program (UNDP) contractors in Lebanon, in order to guarantee the continuity of the public installation in various ministries and public institutions.
The Central Bank of Lebanon said on Wednesday that the government should be the one to submit all its accounts for the forensic audit of the accounts, after the interim government asked it to provide all the required data to the consulting firm Alvarez & Marsal.
The bank added in a statement that it would not be able to provide data, as this would violate the country’s bank secrecy laws.
Former Lebanese Minister of Economy and Trade, Raed Khoury, had previously said that the demands of the International Monetary Fund and the French initiative relate to the accounting audit of the Banque du Liban to find out the size of the losses, and not to the criminal audit .
He added, in statements to Al-Arabiya, that serious reforms must be carried out in order to obtain loans from international institutions.
