Few states remain to decide on the president who will lead the country for the next four years. But they are sensitive states, and competition in them is so intense that polling and election experts hadn’t expected it. Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Joe Biden compete for votes in the electoral college to determine the outcome. But what if the two finally match up?
That the two contestants obtain equal votes in the electoral college (269 votes), it is possible since the competition between them still develops with slight differences in most of the remaining states. So what happens in this case?
The electoral college includes 538 votes, and its members meet in the capitals of their states after the presidential elections, to determine who is the new president, so the winner must obtain at least 270 votes to win office. Members meet in their states on December 14 to elect the president and vice president.
And that date was set by US law, which stipulates that “they will meet and vote on the first Monday after the second Wednesday in December.”
According to a report published by the network “10WBNS”, if the two candidates tie, the decision to elect the new president will be made by the House of Representatives, so the winner is not voted as individuals but as states, that is, each vote has one vote, for the members of each state to agree on an opinion, the winner is voted The council must obtain 26 votes.
And while Democrats still have a majority in the House of Representatives overall, by dividing the states, Republicans have a majority. It is unclear if that will change after the results of the current elections. This means that Trump will welcome the appeal to the House of Representatives.
However, if the votes in the House of Representatives are tied with 25 votes for each candidate, then a state must change its vote to break the tie.
If not, the vice president-elect will assume office until new elections are held and the vice president is elected by the senators by majority, provided that at least two-thirds of the members of the Chamber participate in this vote.
According to the constitution, in January 2021 Congress is declared the winner of the presidency, which is sworn in on January 20.
