A democracy of Lebanese descent loses its seat in Congress to a republican woman

Donna Shalala, a Democrat of Lebanese descent who served as Health Minister under President Bill Clinton, lost her Florida seat by a slim margin to Republican candidate Maria Elvira Salazar.

Salazar, a former Cuban television journalist, will represent the 27th Congressional District of Florida, which includes Miami and the surrounding communities in Miami-Dade County.

Shalala is known for her close relationships with Bill and Hillary Clinton, where she served as Secretary of Health and Human Services under the Clinton presidency from 1993 to 2001, and later became president of the Clinton Foundation.

She was also the first Lebanese-American to hold a ministerial position in the White House, in addition to that, she previously held the position of President of the University of Miami.

Shalala previously said that he will work with Congress and the State Department to ensure that the United States has provided humanitarian aid to Lebanon after the Beirut port explosion.

Republican candidates won 16 of 27 seats in Florida’s congressional race, according to the Associated Press data.

US President Donald Trump received 51.3 percent of the vote compared to former US Vice President Joe Biden, who received 47.8 percent in the state’s presidential election.
