The death toll from the Izmir earthquake in western Turkey has risen to 109 – Al-Manar channel website – Lebanon

On Tuesday, the Turkish authorities announced that the death toll from the devastating earthquake that struck the west of the country on October 30 has risen from 102 to 109.

Turkey’s Presidency of Emergency and Disaster Management stated that the earthquake killed 109 people and injured 1,036 others, adding that 898 of them left hospitals, while another 138 continue to receive necessary medical care.

AFAD added that after the earthquake there were 1,562 aftershocks, of which 44 were greater than 4 magnitude.

He indicated that search and rescue operations continue in 4 buildings in Izmir state, the one most affected by the earthquake, while emergency teams have completed their work in 13 buildings.

Yesterday, Monday, AFAD announced that the authorities had distributed more than 3,500 tents and 13,000 beds to provide temporary shelters for those affected.

On Friday, an earthquake measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale struck the western regions of Turkey, especially Izmir, which suffered more damage than other Turkish states.

Avad explained that the epicenter of the earthquake was in the Aegean Sea, and it occurred 17 km off the coast of the city of Sivrihsar in Izmir state, and at a depth of 16.54 km below the surface of the earth.

For his part, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan promised that the government would build new houses for citizens whose houses were destroyed by the earthquake as soon as possible.

The earthquake also hit the Greek island of Samos, killing two students at a school in the city of Vathy, as well as injuring 8 other people.
