The referendum on the draft constitutional amendment in Algeria witnessed weak voter turnout, as the percentage of votes according to the head of the Independent National Electoral Authority, Mohamed Charfi, reached 23.7 percent, or 5586259 million votes.
The total number of the electoral college was 24,475,310 citizens, of which 23,568,012 residents in Algeria, in addition to 907,298 citizens of the national community abroad.
On Sunday, the wife of the Algerian president, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, voted on her husband’s behalf in the referendum on the draft amendment to the new constitution.
The Algerian daily “An-Nahar” said: “The wife of the President of the Republic, Abdel Majid Tebboune, left today, Sunday, for her husband, to vote on the draft amendment to the new constitution.”
The newspaper added: “The wife of the President of the Republic, Tebboune, fulfilled her electoral duty, accompanied by relatives, at the Ahmed Erwa school in Bouchaoui, in the capital.”
A statement from the Algerian presidency noted that President Tebboune had fulfilled his electoral duty by proxy, due to his presence in a specialized hospital in Germany to receive treatment.
The statement added that President Tebboune prohibited him from casting his vote in the referendum on the draft amendment to the constitution, at the Ahmed Erwa school, west of the capital.
Polling stations were opened for the constitutional referendum in Algeria today, when nearly 25 million Algerians were invited to vote on a constitutional amendment that is supposed to establish a “new Algeria.”
