British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced a new one-month shutdown in England after warning that the outbreak of the new Corona virus would overwhelm hospitals in weeks without taking drastic action.
In addition, Johnson said at a televised press conference on Saturday that the new measures will begin on Thursday and continue until Dec. 2.
Johnson added that without the new measures, “we can see the death toll in this country reaching several thousand a day,” emphasizing that he had high hopes for a vaccine next year.
Bars and restaurants can only serve fast food, non-essential shops must be closed, and people will only be able to leave the house for a short list of reasons, including exercise.
In context, UK Chief Scientific Adviser Patrick Vallance said on Saturday that the number of deaths in England during the winter due to Covid-19 may be double or more compared to the first wave of spring.
And unlike the UK’s first shutdown earlier this year, schools, universities, construction sites and industrial companies will remain open.
Johnson hoped that a set of regional restrictions would be enough to contain the virus, but government scientific advisers predict that in the current course of the outbreak, demand for hospital beds will soon exceed capacity.
