On Saturday, Turkish authorities announced that 25 people were being prosecuted for “offensive” tweets on social media about the Izmir earthquake.

“Those who continue to spread their grudges and hatred on social media will be detained,” the deputy interior minister said on social media. The units of the General Security Directorate monitored 37 posts, measures were taken against 25 people and there are 6 detainees.

Earlier today, the Gaziantep Police Department announced the “arrest of a person who posted a negative video” via Twitter about the Izmir earthquake.

A complaint was filed against the detainee for “inciting hatred and enmity or humiliating the public.”

The Izmir Security Directorate had warned on Friday, about two hours after the earthquake, that it would persecute those who post negative statements about the Izmir earthquake.

Social media accounts in Turkey are strictly censored and dozens of people have been jailed for tweets that the authorities consider “offensive.”

And in October, a new law came into effect imposing huge fines on social media platforms if they fail to appoint a representative in Turkey to receive requests from the government for published content.
