Turkey on Thursday strongly condemned the “brutal” knife attack that killed three people in Nice, southeastern France, setting aside the great tension between Ankara and Paris to express its “solidarity”.

“We strongly condemn the attack carried out today inside the church of Notre Dam in Nice, and offer our condolences to the families of the victims,” the Turkish Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Three people were killed and others injured Thursday in Nice by a person carrying a knife, and he was arrested, while the Antiterrorist Prosecutor’s Office announced the opening of an investigation into the attack.

Two of the victims died in the church of Notre Dame, in the heart of the coastal city overlooking the Mediterranean, while the third died after being seriously injured in a nearby bar where she had taken refuge, according to a police source.

A source close to the investigation confirmed that “the attacker shouted” God is great “while carrying out the attack.

The source added: “The attacker, who was wounded by gunshots during his arrest, said his name was” Ibrahim “and that he was” 25 years old. “

The attack comes in a period of mounting anger in the Islamic world after statements by French President Emmanuel Macron, who promised “not to abandon the cartoons” of the Prophet Muhammad.

Many Muslim countries are witnessing demonstrations condemning the cartoons, calls to boycott French products and chants condemning the French president.
