The director of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, announced yesterday Monday that “we cannot give up and we must not give up” in the battle against Covid-19 with the renewed outbreak of the epidemic both in Europe and in the United States.
Tedros acknowledged that countries were tired after months of fighting the epidemic that resulted in the deaths of more than 1.1 million people, but called for the battle to continue the day after White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, announced that the United States could not control the pandemic and focus more on drugs and vaccines.
“When officials act quickly, the virus can be eliminated,” he said.
In context, WHO officials said Europe needs a “serious intensification” of efforts to combat the emerging corona virus, but the organization remains optimistic that European countries will not need to impose blanket isolation measures at the national level.
“We continue to hope that countries do not have to impose blanket isolation,” WHO technical director Maria Van Kerkhove said when asked about the growing number of injuries in Europe.
The organization’s emergency expert, Mike Ryan, said: “We are currently in a very late position to contain this virus in Europe and therefore, in order to take the initiative, it will be necessary to seriously intensify measures.”
