Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte on Monday condemned the “unacceptable” statements by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan against his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron, following the latter’s positions on Islam.

Conte wrote in a tweet in French: “The statements made by President Erdogan to President Macron are unacceptable.” He added: “Personal insults do not help achieve the positive agenda that the European Union wants to pursue with Turkey. Rather, eliminate solutions. Full solidarity with President Emmanuel Macron ”, according to Agence France-Presse.

The Turkish president attacks his French counterpart because he assured that France will continue to defend the cartoons of the prophet Muhammad, a promise that Macron made during a patriotic tribute to teacher Samuel Patti, who was beheaded in an assault for showing these drawings to his students.

Two weeks ago, the Turkish president, who used to have verbal disputes with Macron, denounced the French president’s statements about “Islamic isolationism” and the need to “structure Islam” in France, at a time when the French government presented a bill about it.

Erdogan questioned Macron’s mental health at the time, suggesting that he undergo “checks”, in an attack he repeated over the weekend.
